Matthew Emslie-Smith as the Centre’s Senior Specialist, Wetlands and Climate Policy Advisor

UNEP-DHI is pleased to welcome Matthew Emslie-Smith as Senior Specialist, Wetlands and Climate Policy Advisor at the UNEP-DHI Centre. Matthew joined the Centre in October 2025.

”Wetlands across the world are changing. Understanding how they are transforming can help us make effective and just decisions to conserve their diverse natural ecosystems, ensuring they remain places that shape our lives, cultures and societies in positive ways.”, says Matthew Emslie-Smith.

Matthew is an environmental policy specialist with expertise in protected area governance and management, climate action and policy, and rights-based approaches to biodiversity conservation. Holding a Master’s degree in Conservation Science and Policy, Matthew brings a wealth of experience from academia in Central Asia and from his work with IUCN on the conservation and monitoring of natural World Heritage sites.

Matthew's work at the Centre:

At UNEP-DHI, Matthew will collaborate closely with scientists at the Global Wetland Center (GWC), a joint initiative between the University of Copenhagen and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Global Wetlands Watch, to advance the preservation of wetlands globally – bridging action-oriented research with policy on freshwater, climate, and biodiversity.

Wetlands cover only a small fraction of Earth’s land surface, yet they play a vital role in storing carbon and supporting biodiversity. Peatlands alone make up just 3% of global land area but store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined. Decades of drainage have caused biodiversity loss and increased emissions, highlighting the urgent need for better data and effective solutions.

Matthew’s arrival will support UNEP-DHI’s ongoing efforts to improve data and develop effective solutions for integrating wetlands into global water and climate strategies.
