World Water Day 2026 highlights the critical relationship between water, women, and gender equality

On 22 March 2026, people around the world mark the World Water Day 2026 under the theme ‘Water and Gender’. This global celebration day highlights the critical relationship between water, women, and gender equality, which is also reflected in the United Nations World Water Development Report 2026: Water for All People: Equal Rights and Opportunities.

As we face growing risks, from a changing climate to financing shortfalls, we need to start managing water as a common good and building resilience for the future. To ensure all voices are heard, women must be equitably represented at all levels of water leadership – helping design every pipe and policy.

The United Nations World Water Development Report 2026 outlines practical steps to close gender gaps and advance progress towards sustainable water management and the Sustainable Development Goals.
