SDG indicator 6.5.1 is the “Degree of integrated water resources management (IWRM) implementation”. It is used to track country progress towards SDG Target 6.5: “By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate”.
UNEP is the custodian agency for indicator 6.5.1, with UNEP-DHI responsible for supporting countries to monitor and report, including through the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme.
In the global baseline year of 2017, 172 countries reported an average IWRM implementation of 49/100, with scores ranging from 10 to 100. The main message can be distilled into two words: accelerate progress.
The second round of country reporting took place in 2020, with more than 150 countries participating.
