Launch of the 2026 SDG 6.5.1 Data Drive

The fourth round of global reporting on SDG 6 indicators is now underway. As part of UN Water’s Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6 (IMI-SDG6), the UNEP-DHI Centre has shared all materials for reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.1 with the Focal Points of UN Member States in the first week of March. The package includes the official 2026 SDG 6.5.1 survey, pre-filled for all countries with their responses from previous rounds to make the reporting process more efficient, a monitoring guide providing an overview of the processes for completing and submitting the survey, as well as a one-page survey summary.

How the 2026 reporting works

The survey is the official mechanism for countries to report on SDG Indicator 6.5.1: “Degree of integrated water resources management (IWRM) implementation.” It also serves as a simple diagnostic tool for countries to assess strengths and gaps in IWRM implementation to prioritize actions for advancing progress towards SDG Target 6.5.

Within the survey, countries are asked to score 33 questions from 0-100 across four dimensions:

  • Enabling Environment,
  • Institutions and Participation,
  • Management Instruments,
  • and Financing.

Each score contains a free-text field where countries can explain their rating, highlight progress since 2023 reporting, and outline the next steps to reach the target by 2030. They are also encouraged to share how climate‑change considerations are integrated within each dimension.

Countries are invited to submit their first draft of the survey to UNEP by the 5th of June 2026. he official timeline for the reporting is illustrated below.

Support for countries throughout the process

To support countries throughout the reporting process, the UNEP‑DHI Centre offers three main resources:

  • IWRM Data Portal: All materials are available on the platform. It also provides access to country, regional and global data on IWRM from the three previous data drives in 2017, 2020, and 2023, and tracks progress on SDG indicator 6.5.1.
  • SDG 651 Help Desk: On behalf of UNEP, the Centre runs a Help Desk which offers guidance and assistance to countries on matters such as interpretation of survey questions and thresholds, the appropriate level of stakeholder engagement, and support with submissions. The Help Desk is responsible for quality assurance of all national submissions.
  • SDG6 IWRM Support Programme: In partnership with Global Water Partnership (GWP) and Cap-Net, and under the guidance of UNEP, the Centre provides technical/financial support to pre-selected countries through Stage 1 of the SDG 6 Support Programme to facilitate the organisation of multi-stakeholder consultations to gather country data for SDG indicator 6.5.1 reporting.
