Sustainable wastewater management as a pillar for the sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine

The report “Sustainable wastewater management as a pillar for the sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine” stresses the need to shift from viewing wastewater as a burden to treating it as a valuable resource. With outdated infrastructure, rural-urban gaps, and attacks on utilities, only 50% of household wastewater is safely treated, posing major health and environmental risks.

Reconstruction offers a chance to adopt sustainable wastewater practices that support energy security, climate goals, and resource recovery. As Ukraine aligns its water policies with EU standards amid conflict, investments must prioritize integrated, sustainable solutions. This publication outlines calls to action and practical, science-based approaches to turn wastewater into a driver of green recovery and resilience.
