The WIPO GREEN database is a free, solutions oriented, global innovation catalogue that connects needs for solving environmental or climate change problems with tangible solutions. The database consists of user uploads of needs and solutions, green technology patents from the WIPO Patentscope database, imports from select partner organizations, relevant knowledge material, and relevant expert profiles.
Some of the unique features of the database are: Always-on AI-assisted auto-matching, user uploads tracing and alerts, full-text search for solutions based on long need descriptions, and the Patent2Solution search function for finding commercial applications of a patent. Free registration is required for uploading.
Solutions for Water Management
With around 2 billion people still without access to safe drinking water, this category of the WIPO GREEN database is vital. Water is abundant, but its spatial, temporal, and qualitative distribution is uneven and changing. Thus, innovation can provide solutions in many areas ranging from monitoring and prediction of reservoirs, waterflows, and precipitation, to increasing water use efficiency, avoiding loss, protecting against pollution, and treating for safe consumption. Climate change has huge impact on water availability and also increases water hazards in the form of flooding and coastal erosion.
UNEP-DHI contribution to the WIPO Green Database
Between 2020 and 2024, the UNEP-DHI Centre, in partnership with UN Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN), UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre and IUCN developed the Match! Water Solutions Portal.
Match! was an online tool that brought together water managers facing water challenges, with technology providers with solutions ranging from the simple to the sophisticated, and from low-tech to hi-tech. Solutions in Match! could be filtered by challenge and solution type, as well as geography. Also provided was general guidance on technology maturity, costs and implementation timeframe.
More than 300 solutions providers were included in the Match! portal. In April 2025, the content was integrated to the WIPO GREEN Database.
