Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) needs to be part of the discussion for the climate change adaptation agenda at UNFCCC COP 29. With the conference running in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11th to 22nd, it’s an opportune moment to assess the coordination between water resources management and climate actions.
The world has mismanaged its freshwater reserves for decades, hampering progress towards the SDGs. Some 50 per cent of countries globally have one or more types of freshwater-related ecosystems – rivers, lakes, wetlands or aquifers – in a state of degradation, finds a recent report from UNEP.
A series of publications was developed through the IWRM SDG6 Support Programme on valuing water in Tanzania with the objective of assessing the contribution of water to the national economy.

Data from the third round of global reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.1 are now live on the IWRM Data Portal. The portal contains all country reports, summaries, and the full global dataset. Across three reporting cycles, 191 countries have submitted data on SDG 6.5.1, with 137 of these reporting in all three rounds.
