The report ‘Status of IWRM & Transboundary Cooperation in Central America’ reviews the status of water in six Central American countries. In addition to highlighting progress made, the report outlines key challenges and enabling factors for advancing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and transboundary cooperation across the region.
Riparian countries worked together with UNEP towards improving the scientific understanding of the hydrological regimes and ecosystem services of the Omo-Turkana and D’aua-Juba-Shabelle basins, creating tools for decision support of sustainable management of the transboundary water resources.
Improving the scientific understanding of the hydrological regimes and ecosystem services of Lake Turkana and its river basins will inform decision making on the sustainable management of the transboundary water resources.
New data on the degree of IWRM implementation in countries are now available on the IWRM Data Portal.
The Horn of Africa region faces numerous challenges with regard to water resources management. UNEP-DHI supported regional stakeholders to enhance collaboration for management of cross-border surface water and aquifers by mapping the situation and developing internal knowledge briefs.
