The Horn of Africa region faces numerous challenges with regard to water resources management. UNEP-DHI supported regional stakeholders to enhance collaboration for management of cross-border surface water and aquifers by mapping the situation and developing internal knowledge briefs.
UNEP-DHI is one of the core consortium partners of the CTCN and has been providing technical assistance to countries in the domain of water management and climate change adaptation.
UNEP, supported by UNEP-DHI, is engaged in the discussions on the technical assistance needed to understand the extent and properties of the peatlands in Congo basin, and to retrieve the necessary information and analysis to inform suitable protection measures.
UNEP-DHI is contributing to the global monitoring and reporting on the SDG indicator 6.6.1 producing the first of kind global assessment of the status and change of water-related ecosystems, based on Earth Observation.
Requested in The COP 13 as part of the Drought Initiative, the UNCCD Drought Toolbox was designed to provide drought stakeholders with easy access to tools, case studies and other resources to support the design of National Drought Policy Plan with the aim to boost the resilience of people and ecosystems to drought.
This project assessed the status and trends of the world’s 286 transboundary river basins, shared by 156 countries. The assessment included 15 key indicators on water quantity, water quality, ecosystems, governance and socioeconomics.
UNEP is the custodian agency for indicator 6.5.1 on IWRM implementation, with UNEP-DHI responsible for supporting countries to monitor and report, including through the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme.
The Flood and Drought Management Tools initiative provides a methodology with online tools to facilitate the inclusion of information on floods and droughts, and future scenarios into basin water management.
