The world has mismanaged its freshwater reserves for decades, hampering progress towards the SDGs. Some 50 per cent of countries globally have one or more types of freshwater-related ecosystems – rivers, lakes, wetlands or aquifers – in a state of degradation, finds a recent report from UNEP.
The UNEP-DHI Centre contributed to the 2024 gender snapshot conclusions on SDG 6, to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The report highlights how women are central to water collection and use, but marginalized in water management, plans and decisions.
The Ministry of Water of Tanzania, the Wami Ruvu Basin Water Board and GWP, on behalf of the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme, have been collaborating to understand the economic value of water for Tanzania, and will be presenting the results in a public hybrid format, online and in-person at select sites.
UNEP-DHI is co-hosting a side event during the Tenth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention (MOP 10) in, Slovenia on SDG 6.5 reporting.
The 2024 global progress report gives an overview of the status of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) around the world as of 2023. Findings show global progress towards IWRM implementation has increased from 49% in 2017 to 57% in 2023. But the world is not on track to reach the 2030 target and will not achieve sustainable water management until at least 2049 – 25 years from now. Read the full report to learn more!

Data from the third round of global reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.1 are now live on the IWRM Data Portal. The portal contains all country reports, summaries, and the full global dataset. Across three reporting cycles, 191 countries have submitted data on SDG 6.5.1, with 137 of these reporting in all three rounds.
