UNEP-DHI is providing technical assistance to the Reversing Ecosystem and Water Degradation in the Volta River Basin (REWarD) project in 2023-2026. Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through UNEP and IUCN, the five-year project is being implemented by the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and the Global Water Partnership-West Africa (GWP-WA) between 2023-2028.
Data from the third round of global reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.1 are now live on the IWRM Data Portal. The portal contains all country reports, summaries, and the full global dataset. Across three reporting cycles, 191 countries have submitted data on SDG 6.5.1, with 137 of these reporting in all three rounds.
The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus policy note is the latest collaboration between UNEP-DHI and UNCEP-CCC! It’s aim is to give practical information about the WEFE nexus and to inform policy makers of potential implementation pathways.
The Rapid Environmental Assessment of the Kakhovka Dam Breach, carried out by UNEP at the request of the Ukrainian Government, uses UNEP-DHI’s expertise in modelling to assess the hydrological impacts.
In collaboration with UNEP and FAO, UNEP-DHI is implementing a project aimed at protecting biodiversity and key ecosystem functions related to carbon storage and water resources in the Congo Basin Peatlands for the next fours years. The project is funded by the German International Climate Initiative (IKI).
Over the next six years, the Global Wetland Center will acquire more knowledge on how wetlands can reduce the emission and increase the absorption of greenhouse gases. The new research centre is established by DHI A/S, University of Copenhagen and GEUS and is supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with DKK 60 million.
UN Water is coordinating the third round of global data compilation on SDG 6 indicators. UNEP is actively taking part in the 2023 data drive due to its role as the custodian agency of SDG indicators on IWRM, freshwater ecosystems, and ambient water quality. UNEP-DHI is supporting the implementation of the global 6.5.1 reporting exercise.
To promote sustainable management of lakes, UNEP has launched a portal that provides information about the diversity of lake ecosystems, their importance for human development and planetary health, the interlinked threats they face, and initiatives that UNEP, its partners and you can undertake to help conserve, protect, and restore them to their former glory.

UNEP-DHI is supporting the National Flood and Drought Task Force of Somalia in researching the applicability of NbS for riverine and flash flood risk mitigation. The project focuses on the communities within the Juba-Shabelle River basin.
